wTVision is an Official Technical Supplier of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, one of the longest-running and most prestigious TV Shows in Europe. The event will be broadcasted in the 43 participant countries and it is estimated that more than 200 million people will watch it at home, making it one of the biggest TV productions in the world.

The data and graphics operations of this major event will include wTVision’s Studio CG and R³ Space Engine and demand a team of six wTVision operators. The project includes both semi-finals, on May 8 and 10, and the final on May 12: all taking place in the Altice Arena, in Lisbon.

The graphic information regarding the votes from the jury and from viewers all over Europe will be generated through a PCR solution that combines wTVision’s Studio CG and R³ Space Engine (wTVision’s real-time 3D graphics engine). The same solution will be implemented to manage the voting graphics and the lower thirds.

The voting data will be imported in real time, integrating with the official provider. wTVision will also be in charge of the Host Voting System, a web setup supplying the hosts of the show and directors with valuable information, namely the countries qualified, the countries currently voting and changes on the leaderboard, among many others. The commentators from the 43 participant countries will also have access to the voting information at all times, thanks to a specific system designed for that purpose.

wTVision will assure full redundancy for the entire project. One specialized operator (safeguarded by a backup operator) will manage the Scrutineers Desk through two computers (one main machine and one backup) equipped with R³ Space Engine and Studio CG. The same setup will be implemented for the lower-thirds operation. The Host Voting System will work through web technology, in a project specifically developed for the Eurovision Song Contest, to maximize its flexibility. The eventual need of disaster recovery is also anticipated through a ultimate backup computer equipped with R³ Space Engine, Studio CG and the project setup necessary to generate the most critical information.

Finally, the graphics for the event were also implemented by wTVision’s broadcast design team.
